To add to your selection
Press and hold down the SHIFT key, while adding to the existing selection. If you add a selection to an existing selection area, these two selections will merge to become one selected area. If you add a selection from somewhere else in the image (not touching the existing selection), it will simply add another (a second) selection.
To subtract from your selection
If you have an area selected, and you want to subtract from it, hold down the ALT key and select the area you want subtracted.
You can only subtract from an existing selection.
